Zachary Wailes, 27, was sentenced recently in federal court on charges of theft and robbery. Wailes was accused of entering the Scranton office of Peoples Bank on Feb. 25 and taking several thousand dollars while employees believed he had a hand gun.
Wailes must spend eight years and four months in federal prison before his release. He was also ordered to pay $19,157 in restitution fees.
Wailes was shown on bank security cameras entering the Scranton Main Street building about 10:45 am. He was dressed in black with a zebra-print gaiter and sunglasses to conceal his identity. He carried a backpack but was only inside the building for a few minutes.
He left the bank and got into an unidentified vehicle parked a short distance away.
The Greene County sheriff’s office released a photo of the suspect from the surveillance video. Wailes was identified soon after the photo was posted.
Tyler Mattingly of Carroll has entered a guilty plea to a Class C Felony for theft in the first degree. Mattingly admitted his role of aiding and abetting Wailes in the robbery.
Mattingly owned up to making a false accident phone call on the east side of Greene County to law enforcement to draw authorities away from Scranton about the same time the robbery was taking place.
He was scheduled for sentencing in October but he failed to appear. That court action has been continued until he is located. ~courtesy of The Scranton Journal
